Enjoy the Health Benefits of Exercise on National Walking Day!
Today is National Walking Day! Spring is finally here, and we can shed a few layers and lace up our walking shoes to celebrate the day! It may seem counterintuitive, but most people with arthritis find that physical exercise is an excellent way to ease pain, soothe achy joints and increase energy levels – just check with your doctor first to discuss your arthritis type and individual needs.
National Walking Day is an initiative led by the American Heart Association, but its call to action to be more active on a regular basis resonates strongly with the arthritis community, as walking can be especially beneficial for people with arthritis. We believe in the power of physical activity to help ease pain and manage arthritis symptoms.
In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently unveiled new arthritis statistics – increasing the number of Americans with arthritis from one in five to one in four – and suggested that there are preventative measures Americans should take to ward off or delay the onset of arthritis. The recommendation include physical activity and education. According to the CDC’s study, adults who commit to physical activity can reduce their arthritis symptoms by up to 40 percent!
We know that physical activity, such as walking, is important for people with arthritis. That's why one of our largest fundraisers – Walk to Cure Arthritis – combines the power of movement with our mission to find a cure and better treatments for arthritis! The funds raised from the 5K support our nonprofit mission and research aimed at finding a cure for arthritis. So far, we’ve raised $2.9M this year! Learn more about Walk to Cure Arthritis and sign up for a Walk near you.
We also provide tools and resources to help educate people about their exercise options and help them get started on their journey. The Arthritis Foundation’s six week Walk With Ease program teaches people how how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday life. Check out the program online, through our mobile app, at home on your own, or get a group together and complete the program in a community/worksite setting. Choose the format that best suits you.
If you’re looking for even more ways to get active, check out our Your Exercise Solution tool or download the mobile app to get customized exercise recommendations and modifications to help you exercise safely for your arthritis type!
So, what are you waiting for? Spring is here, and it’s time to get steppin’ for your health!
