Arthritis Foundation celebrates the legacy of Dr. Stephen Katz
It is with sadness that the Arthritis Foundation notes the passing of Dr. Stephen Katz, who presided over the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) as Director of the Institute since 1995.
Dr. Katz was a sharp and quick-witted intellect. His advice was freely given and derived from expertise that spanned many areas of health, government, and science. He did not mince words, and was steadfast in his commitment to improving lives through the promise of scientific discovery.
He believed deeply in the immense skill and creativity of the scientists around him, and devoted energy to assuring that resources were available so that good ideas, wherever they might arise, could be supported through the Institute. Dr. Katz was also committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers, and this mentorship became a cornerstone of his career.
The Arthritis Foundation will forever be grateful for Dr. Katz’s stewardship of the Institute in the midst of rapidly evolving treatment paradigms: from the transformation of biology through the molecular era, to the advent of biologics, and the sophistication of big data approaches in present day. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Katz’s family and all of his colleagues during this difficult time.
