An Ancient Disease That Needs More Visibility
The earliest traces of arthritis date back to prehistoric times, detected in the fossils of dinosaurs. The first signs of arthritis in humans were found in the skeletal remains of Native Americans, going back as far as 4500 BC. Ever since, this insidious disease has fanned out across the world. Some estimates put the number of those affected globally at approximately 350 million.
However long arthritis has been around, most people still don’t realize that it’s a real – and very serious – disease. Many think of arthritis as inevitable aches and pains that only the elderly encounter. That it’s just something to expect and put up with.
True, about half of all Americans age 65 and older report doctor-diagnosed arthritis. But if you dig deeper, it’s astounding to learn that two-thirds of the U.S. population younger than 65 battles arthritis, comprised of over 100 types of the disease. Surprising to many: Nearly 300,000 children in the U.S. have some form of arthritis – more children than those who face cystic fibrosis, juvenile diabetes and leukemia combined.
That’s why the Arthritis Foundation is working hard to put arthritis in the spotlight –through our Let’s Get a Grip on Arthritis campaign. CVS Health is Presenting Sponsor of the campaign’s second year. On top of being our Partner for Better Living, CVS Pharmacy is helping spread the word about the devastating toll arthritis takes – through in-store promotions to raise awareness among consumers.
The Let’s Get a Grip on Arthritis cause campaign aims to raise the bar on awareness-building and encourage more people to join the arthritis community and get involved. Arthritis is a serious, life-altering disease that demands greater attention.
This past May, during Arthritis Awareness Month, CVS Health, Presenting Partner of the Let’s Get a Grip on Arthritis campaign, donated $1 to the Arthritis Foundation for each select brand purchased. That added up to $300,000 from sales of Blue-Emu Maximum Arthritis Pain Relief Cream, Advil Liqui-Gels, Biofreeze Cold Therapy Pain Relief, Dr. Scholl’s Arthritis Pain Shock Guard, Tylenol Arthritis Pain Tablets, Tiger Balm Ultra Strength Ointment and other products.
CVS Health is proud to support the Arthritis Foundation. Arthritis affects patients of all ages and as a Partner for Better Living, we’re committed to helping them manage their condition through treatment, easy access to specially-selected products to support their treatment, and raising awareness of this disease. The Arthritis Foundation shares our commitment to our purpose of helping people on their path to better heath.

Here are some quick facts we’re trying to get across:
- About a quarter of adults in this country have been officially diagnosed with some form of arthritis. At least 54 million Americans are directly affected.
- But the real number may be almost double that – 91 million+ – according to a recent study that also accounts for those who haven’t been officially diagnosed, but whose symptoms indicate the likelihood of arthritis.
- Almost 300,000 kids have arthritis, which can attack the eyes, skin, lungs and other vital organs. Treatments are still experimental, meaning a trial-and-error approach that the Arthritis Foundation is working to make more precise and personalized.
- Arthritis is often accompanied by comorbidities. Half of adults with arthritis also have heart disease and/or diabetes. A third of obese Americans has arthritis.
- Anxiety and depression are common among people with arthritis, attributed to feelings of isolation and being misunderstood.
